I got to thinking that the makers of novelty New Year’s glasses are kinda shit out of luck in 2011, right? I feel like they can eke out 2010, however awkwardly (and hey, you might get a kick out of the results of a Google Image search for 2010 New Years glasses; I certainly did) but after that, the entire industry could just go kaput. Which is sad, because I mean look at that pic! So fun, so wacky. SO FESTIVE.
Speaking of seasonally appropriate accessories, I forgot that those giant bomber furlined earflapped hats are a “look” until I spotted three on my way to the office today. I have nothing against the hats per se — they’re quite functional, for one thing — but when I spy them on a certain subset of New Yorkers my first instinct is to wonder how much they overpaid.
Because I was in Calypso yesterday and saw a soft looking pile of snowy fluff on a shelf. I picked it up, unsure at first, then realized it was mittens. Giant, downy, pristine-white mittens that you put on your hands and then, presumably, use to featherdust the ambient dirt and grime from every surface that you pass.
I held them up. “Does anyone actually buy these?” I asked the salesgirl. “Who could even wear them? Russian princesses who don’t touch anything?”
“Oh, we’ve actually sold SO many of those!” she replied, laughing at the look on my face. “More of the black ones, though.”
That made sense to me; the black ones would at least hide the dust for a couple extra days, although the speed with which a winter storm would turn those lil fluffballs into shivering wet Pomeranians would be unaffected by pigment, I would think.
It stopped making sense to me though when I went to the webpage and saw how much they cost.
